CURIOUS ABOUT THE CLITORIS? LEARN MORE:
💥 It’s larger than you think. The clitoris is not just the glans that you can see externally! It extends backward and behind the labia minora and majora. It has legs (crus) and two bulbs (bulbs of vestibule).
🧠 It swells during sexual arousal. The clitoris contains spongy erectile tissue that fills with blood during sexual arousal (much like the penis).
💥 It plays a crucial role in reproduction (it does not just exist to provide pleasure). Stimulation of the clitoris assists in helping us to reach a state of arousal whereby the vaginal walls and Bartholins glands can secrete lubricative arousal fluid. Without this fluid, penetration (and therefore reproduction) would be very difficult and painful.
🧠 It’s often said that the clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings: double that of the penis! However, the number of nerve endings in the clitoris has not been fully studied, and these figures come from a 1976 study of cow genitals!
💥 The clitoris remains chronically underrepresented in medical textbooks due to ingrained sexism in medicine. @jessica_ann_pin is a patient advocate on Instagram who has shown that up to tens of thousands of words are dedicated to the penis in urology textbooks for medical students. But in OB/GYN textbooks, the clitoris is lucky to get 100 words.
🧠 Because of this disparity of education, many labiaplasty surgeons are not fully informed on the internal structure of nerves and vasculature of the clitoris. Without the proper education, surgeons performing clitoral hood reduction procedures can sometimes cause nerve damage to the clitoris (as the dorsal nerves run just beneath the skin in this area). Jessica Pinn experienced this reduction in sensation due to nerve damage from clitoral hood reduction during a labiaplasty, and now advocates for better education for surgeons.
