YOUR CERVIX IS A BIOLOGICAL VALVE

Did you know that your cervix changes in firmness, openness and position throughout your menstrual cycle? Your cervix is the lower third of your uterus. It is a muscular canal lined with crypts (pockets) that produce cervical mucus. Your cervix is affected by changes in the levels of your two main reproductive hormones; oestrogen and progesterone.

This diagram shows a "textbook transition where the cervix softens, opens, and rises higher into the vaginal canal the closer we get to ovulation!

You can think of your cervix as a biological valve: it softens, opens and rises higher around the time of ovulation to create an easy passageway for sperm. After ovulation has passed, it rapidly closes, hardens and drops lower into the vaginal canal. The valve is closed and sperm can no longer enter.

Cervix tracking isn't a compulsory part of the Symptothermal Method; instead, it can be a great addition if you are struggling with your cervical mucus observations.

While cervix tracking provides us with a wealth of information, it should not be tracked alone as a form of contraception (it should always be cross-checked against a progesterone biomarker, and preferably also combined with an oestrogenic biomarker such as cervical mucus).

If you choose to track your cervical changes, be sure to learn the rules of your method - there are very specific rules involved in opening and closing the fertile window with your cervix observations.

TIPS:

Check your cervix at the same time each day (the cervix naturally drops lower throughout the day).
Make sure your bladder is empty.
Adopt the same position every time you check your cervix.

Firmness: Softly touch the cervix; when firm it will feel like the tip of your nose or chin. When soft it will feel more like the texture of your lips.
Openness: Gently feel the os (opening) of the cervix. When fertile it may open as wide as 3-8mm (depending on whether you’ve ever given birth).
Height: Use a finger to assess the height of your cervix (you can keep track of how many knuckles “deep” your finger has to go at different phases of your cycle).
