Meet Your Instructor

Hey there! I’ll be here to guide you through each step of your learning journey. With each new video module, you’ll get to know my friendly face as I break down these new concepts for you.

My name is Jessie Brebner, and I am a certified Symptothermal Method instructor. Since 2016 I have been passionately spreading awareness of the Symptothermal Method. I’ve seen first-hand how people’s lives are transformed with body literacy and I want that for you, too!

Each time you log in, you’ll join me in a new video module as we explore cervical mucus, basal body temperature, and natural contraception. Before you know it, you’ll be feeling confident, empowered and free from hormonal contraception side-effects.

I’ve charted over 60 of my own menstrual cycles, navigated conception, miscarriage, pregnancy and postpartum, and taught countless clients how to chart their own cycles for contraception since training with the Natural Family Planning Teachers Association in 2018.

When you choose to work with me, you’re working with a qualified, experienced educator who values evidence-based charting practices above all else.

I’m currently based on the Gold Coast of Australia, although I’m originally from New Zealand.

Frequently asked questions

“I have some questions”

It’s normal to have a lot of questions when you’re considering using the Symptothermal Method for birth control!

Below, I’ve compiled a list of some of the most common questions I hear – scroll down to read through.

YES! In fact, I actually encourage learning as much as you can about charting before coming off hormonal contraception, as it helps the transition to be a lot less stressful.
YES! Regardless of how many books you’ve read or websites you’ve scoured, it can be so reassuring to hear from a qualified instructor. Even if it simply reinforces that you already know everything, and you’re already on the right track, the peace of mind gained is priceless.
YES, absolutely! This course is available wherever you are, worldwide. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, nothing can hold you back. Basal body temperature information and guidelines are provided for BOTH Celsius and Fahrenheit charters; however, chart examples are shown in Celsius only.
No! We are taking our time to deep-dive into our fertility. You can expect to be charting both cervical mucus and basal body temperature by the third week of video modules. If you are in a rush and just want basic information so that you can dive right in, this is NOT the course for you! If you want to take your time, and lay the foundations for true, solid knowledge that grows over time, then THIS IS THE COURSE FOR YOU!
Yes! Each week a new drip of video modules are released for you; however, this is a self-paced course. This means that there is absolutely no pressure on you. You can take as many months or years as you need to work through the content. In fact, you have lifetime access to all course content for as long as this website remains live.
I encourage paper charting during the first three cycles of learning to chart; however, I know that this isn't a good fit for everybody! For those who prefer to chart in an app, you can choose to subscribe to the Read Your Body app for a small annual subscription. I have a RYB chart settings template ready for you to download if that is the case. If you require a free app, you will find information on both Lutea or Kindara apps.
YES! You do not have to be in a relationship to be using the Symptothermal Method to track ovulation for contraception purposes. While the course is focused on pregnancy prevention as a goal, the body literacy you gain has huge benefits that extend FAR beyond contraception.
No, this course is designed for people in times of normal fertility. If you're currently a teenager, immediately postpartum*, perimenopausal, or dealing with cycles over 40-50 days in length, you may be better served by a cervical mucus-only or Symptohormonal method. This will likely reduce the number of days you need to abstain in comparison to using the Symptothermal Method. Please feel free to use the contact form at the bottom of thits page to reach out and I can provide a referral to another instructor of an alternative Fertility Awareness-Based Method (FABM). That said, I have personally charted cycles of over 50 days in length - the Symptothermal Method still allows you to accurately confirm ovulation in this case! However, it does result in a longer period of abstinence or barrier method use while you wait to confirm ovulation. *If your menstrual cycle has returned postpartum, and you have had three menstrual cycles since its return, you can consider yourself past the 'immediate postpartum' for the purposes of Symptothermal Method charting. If you are still waiting for your menstrual cycle to return, this is when I usually recommend a cervical mucus-only approach (eg. Billings Ovulation Method). If you would like a teacher recommendation please reach out and I will provide details 🙂 You can choose to join the course while waiting for your menstrual cycle to return postpartum, as long as you are aware that the knowledge we focus on in this course will be of little use for you until your menstrual cycle returns (although you are welcome to join to get a head-start).
Yes! The Symptothermal Method allows you to identify on a daily basis whether you are currently fertile or not fertile. This is based on daily observation of cervical mucus and basal body temperature (in combination with some calculation rules). You do not need regular menstrual cycles to use the Symptothermal Method. This is a common misconception as many people confuse the Symptothermal Method with something called the 'rhythm method'. The rhythm method does require regular cycles because they predict your current fertility status based on your past cycles. This is not the case with the Symptothermal Method.
No, this course will not be suitable as we do not cover how to assign what is known as a "basic infertile pattern" or "BIP". You will be better served with 1:1 instruction, and may need to seek out an alternative Fertility Awareness-Based Method such as the Billings Ovulation Method.
Some of the video content contains gendered terms such as "woman" and "man". If you would prefer gender neutral terminology for your learning experience, please reach out to me - I can recommend some wonderful alternative FABM instructors for you.
If for any reason you require a refund, you may request a refund during the first seven days following your sign up. After the first seven days, strictly no refunds are provided for any reason.
No, it is not. If you are an allied, alternative or medical health professional who wishes to teach patients and clients how to use the Symptothermal Method for pregnancy prevention, conception or hormonal health-tracking, you will need to obtain a certification. Instructor certification is available through accredited teacher training providers such as NFPTA-UK, SymptoPro, Sensiplan, Couple to Couple League, Natural Fertility New Zealand, Justisse, The WELL, Billings Ovulation Method, Creighton, and FEMM. It is recommended to chart your cycles with your chosen FABM for at least one year before embarking on a teacher training course.
No, this course is designed to learn the Symptothermal Method, not to teach it to others. The Natural Contraception video course is not open for enrolment from other Fertility Awareness-Based Method educators. For continuing education, please visit the Fertility Knowledge Collective (by Tami Stroud and Nathalie Daudet) for upskilling and peer support opportunities.
I am certified via the Natural Family Planning Teachers Association of the United Kingdom; however, I do not teach ‘pure’ NFPTA charting. This course is offered independent of NFPTA oversight. Key instances where the method taught in this course differs from the NFPTA approach include:

  Calculation rules:
NFPTA-UK utilises a First Five Day Rule, an S-21 Rule and an S-20 Rule (and unofficially offers a Minus-8 Rule styled on Döering’s research and protocols). These are incrementally offered as users move through phases (first three cycles, cycles 4-6, cycles 7-12, and cycles 13 and onward). I find this can be overwhelming for new charters, so instead offer simplified conservative calculation rules closer to those of the Sensiplan protocol.
I follow NFPTA protocol and recommend you reserve unprotected sex to Phase 3 only during the first three menstrual cycles of learning. From the 4th menstrual cycle onward, you may choose from the First Five Day Rule or the S-20 Rule (pending certain important conditions are met). From the 13th menstrual cycle onward, you may apply the Minus 8 Rule (pending certain important conditions are met).
The calculation rules that I teach are based on historical Symptothermal Method protocols backed by modern research.

  Basal body temperature
NFPTA allows for adjustments of temperatures taken at different times of the morning. I don’t teach this as I find it can be overwhelming for new users and may encourage BBT inaccuracies.
NFPTA does not provide an exception rule to cover fallback rises; I teach a Fallback Rise rule in accordance with historical Symptothermal Method protocols and this approach is backed by modern research on temperature monitoring.
NFPTA provides charts in a temperature scale of 0.05°C and require temperatures to be plotted between lines. NFPTA employ a visually raised coverline and do not provide a rounding guide for temperatures. I provide charts in a temperature scale of 0.1°C/0.2°F and temperatures can be plotted both between and on the lines. I recommend a coverline that is placed on the highest of the six lows and is not visually raised. I provide a rounding guide for temperatures to be rounded to the nearest 0.05°C/0.1°F as per historical research and guidelines for BBT charting.

  Cervical mucus
NFPTA-UK have a cervical mucus classification system of three tiers (any mucus seen, wet/stretchy, clear/slippery). I do not teach these cervical mucus categories. Instead, I teach students how to record (in their own words) the visual characteristics of their cervical mucus, in addition to sensations at the vulva. Users then summarise these observations into a simple three-tier category of Dry, Non-Peak and Peak type observations. This classification system (Dry, Non-Peak and Peak) is based on historical Symptothermal Method protocols and backed by modern research. It is best suited to users in times of regular fertility and is less suited to those relying primarily on cervical mucus-only in the postpartum and perimenopause.
The Symptothermal Method (double-check variety) can be highly effective with perfect use – proven up to 99.6% effective. For comparison, the combined oral contraceptive Pill is 99.7% effective with perfect use.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that this 99.6% figure is based on study participants who were working closely with a qualified instructor of the Sensiplan Symptothermal Method. Outside of this very particular scenario, no guarantees can be made about the effectiveness of the Symptothermal Method when learned through the Natural Contraception online course.

Why exactly is this? Although the effectiveness is very likely to be comparable based on the method rules, it cannot be guaranteed due to the fact that you are learning online (not in-person), with independently-created course materials that differ from those used in the studies mentioned. In addition, if you are taking the self-paced version of this course you are not having any 1:1 instructor input and are self-teaching yourself with the materials provided.

To read more about effectiveness, click here.

Finally, we know that to achieve the highest possible effectiveness with the Symptothermal Method we need to be able to do THREE things:
  1. Accurately observe and chart our fertility biomarkers.
  2. Accurately apply the rules of the method to open and close the fertile window.
  3. Modify our sexual behaviour during the fertile window.
It is not enough to only do one or two of the above three actions 😊

For those who are able to accurately and consistently chart their cycles, apply the rules, and modify their sexual behaviour, the Symptothermal Method can be extremely effective.

However, consistency is key. All FABMs are highly unforgiving of imperfect use; by definition, if a mistake is made or a risk is taken it will result in unprotected intercourse during the fertile window of the menstrual cycle.

For this reason, it is important to take the learning process seriously if you are strongly trying to prevent pregnancy.

I would be happy to answer it!
